Oklahoma AG files motion seeking to stop Glossip execution

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:44:23 GMT

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma’s attorney general asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to grant death row inmate Richard Glossip a stay of execution, saying there were enough problems with Glossip’s conviction that he deserves a new trial. In an unusual move for a prosecutor, Republican Attorney General Gentner Drummond filed his motion agreeing with defense attorneys that Glossip deserves a stay.Drummond said that while he doesn’t believe Glossip is innocent, he didn’t receive a fair trial. Specifically, Drummond said the key witness against Glossip lied on the stand about his psychiatric condition and his reason for taking the mood-stabilizing drug lithium. When combined with other problems with the state’s prosecution, including the destruction of evidence, the state believes “Glossip’s trial was unfair and unreliable,” Drummond wrote.Glossip is scheduled to be executed May 18 for the 1997 murder-for-hire killing of Glossip’s former boss, Barry Van Treese. DC mayor calls plan to nix K Street project a ‘downtown killer’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:44:23 GMT

A battle is brewing in D.C. over how to pay for free Metrobus service in the nation’s capital. This comes after a proposal last week by Ward 6 Council member Charles Allen, which calls for “pausing” the K Street Transitway project in downtown D.C. and using that money to cover bus fares.“Let me be clear, this will kill the project,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser at a news conference Monday, during which she took issue with Allen’s proposal. The K Street Transitway, which has been in the works since before the pandemic, includes adding dedicated bus lanes and bus platforms that are separated from traffic. Bowser said having the dedicated bus lanes will improve Metrobus service not only downtown, but citywide.“Even people who love buses don’t love buses when they are stuck in traffic and are not reliable,” Bowser said. “Even if they’re free.”The mayor said not moving forward with project would be a “downtown killer.”In attendance at the news conference was Ward 2 Council me...

DENVER (KDVR) -- As home values are soaring across Colorado, so could the amount property owners pay in taxes. Gov. Jared Polis announced a plan Monday that would soften the impact of how much people will pay in property taxes in 2024.The state already passed property tax relief in 2022, but this new plan would create a mechanism to provide relief over a longer term. JBS ends contracts with company that hired kids to clean Greeley meat plant Last week, county assessors warned homeowners about valuations that are coming in the mail, as values shot up roughly 33% to 47% across the Denver metro area. The county's valuation of your property is the first step for calculating property taxes. To help you understand how property taxes are calculated, the Problem Solvers used a template from the Bell Policy Center with an example of a home worth $500,000.Colorado already knocks off $15,000 worth of value from your home, because of the property tax relief package in 2022. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The slaughterhouse cleaning company that was found to be employing more than 100 children to help sanitize dangerous razor-sharp cutting equipment like bone saws has continued to lose contracts with the major meat producers since the investigation became public last fall. For its part, Packers Sanitation Services Inc., or PSSI as it is known, said it has taken a number of steps to tighten up its hiring practices but it says the rising number of child labor cases nationwide is likely related to the increase in the number of minors crossing the U.S. border alone in recent years. Colorado identity theft up 70% since 2019 The scandal that followed the February announcement that PSSI would pay a $1.5 million fine and reform its hiring practices as part of an agreement with investigators also prompted the Biden administration to urge the entire meat processing industry to take steps to ensure no kids are working in these plants either for the meat companies or at contr...
