(The Hill) - Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Wednesday that the House Education Committee will expand its investigation into Harvard President Claudine Gay to include allegations that she committed plagiarism in academic work. The Education Committee previously held a hearing on campus antisemitism featuring Gay and the leaders of the University of Pennsylvania and MIT. At that hearing, the group controversially said that it would depend on context if calls for the genocide of Jewish people to be considered harassment. In a letter Wednesday acquired by Bloomberg, Foxx said the committee will expand its look into Gay, focusing on whether Harvard holds its faculty to the same academic standards as students.“Our concern is that standards are not being applied consistently, resulting in different rules for different members of the academic community,” she wrote. “If a university is willing to look the other way and not hold faculty accountable for engaging in academically dishonest...

Dear Amy: My friend is 15 years older than me. She has her Ph.D. and teaches at a university. She lives beyond her means and is now working two jobs to help pay her credit card bills. She has been married and divorced twice. She is fun to be around; we laugh for hours. She recently asked us if my husband would build a tiny house on our property for her to move into. She expects my husband to build it for her (she would pay for the materials). My husband and I said no. We don’t wish to do this, for many reasons.I explained the many reasons we are saying no. Her comment was, “You can always come up with excuses.”I didn’t let it bother me and went on to change the subject. Opinion: Christmas gifts turbocharge our trash problem. How I cope

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:55:03 GMT

Every time I rip open a lovingly wrapped gift (and plenty of us will be doing a lot of that soon), one thing pops into my mind: trash. The wrapping paper, trash. The package hidden underneath it, trash. And the gift itself, in most cases, future trash, given enough time.Too harsh? Then ask yourself: Do you remember much of what you got last Christmas?Though I’d wager the answer is no, I’d also bet you do remember something: who gave you a present, and the love you felt because of it. Like it or not, giving our friends and family stuff between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one of the most important bonding rituals we have. This is why my instinctive “don’t get me anything” response won’t work when my wife, my mother-in-law and even my children ask what I want for Christmas. My late Norwegian grandparents, who spent much of their childhood under Nazi occupation, appreciated this kind of conspicuous frugality, but to American ears, “Don’t get me anything” sounds like “I want a divor...
